Protostar Remixed Sonic and it’s Mind-Blowing

Thanks to writing for VideoGameDJ, I’ve embarked on a personal mission to seek out as many video game remixes and chiptunes as I can, and share them with you. I’m usually interested in examples that aren’t very well-known, but with tens of thousands of followers and a presence on Monstercat, England-based EDM musician Protostar isn’t exactly “underground”. However,  when I noticed he’s laid his skilled hands on Sonic the Hedgehog, I decided that I would be remiss if I didn’t share it with you. Seriously, just listen to this Chemical Plant Zone remix! Hot damn!

Spoiler alert: When the drop really kicks in at the 1:00 minute mark, things get seriously filthy, in the best way possible. Protostar masterfully achieves “that sound” without it coming across muddy or cluttered, toeing the line between dubstep and glitch-hop with style and grace. Additional composition and arrangement choices are fully on-point, and the crispy clean production really complements the overall design of the track. Lots of really creative stuff happening as the track continues towards the end, and I particularly enjoy the chopping and slicing of the original melodies coupled with fresh new chord progressions.

If you’re a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog, or video game remixes like the ones on GameChops, do yourself a favor and pick up this remixIt’s a free download through Toneden, and all you need to do to get it is follow Protostar on Soundcloud (which you should do anyway). A very small price to pay for such an awesome tune.  Oh! He’s also made a fantastic version of Mystic Cave Zone. Bonus!

You can follow Protostar on Soundcloud, Twitter, and Facebook. Don’t forget to check out his Bandcamp if you want to support.
