cTrix’s gAtari – chipmusic project at blip 2011

Artist at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/cTrix/118258328189500

The “gAtari” was my excuse to do something a little silly after I discovered that the Atari 2600 was more limiting than I realized! (31 pitches, minimal waveforms and only 2 channels!) I needed an EQ which could take a high voltage and drop it down to line level (Boss bass EQ) plus a way to hold loops between tracks and parts (Boss delay). So rather than have it “DJ” style config, I thought I make something a little more creative. It uses my atari-x-mod converter software which compiles binary files for Atari. You can find a little video about it here: http://vimeo.com/23589320

Big ups to Celsius / Trash80 / nf / Lazerbeat for the audio recording. Massive thankyou to sebastienvd81 & JDD3J for shooting additional video footage. Thanks to Wing / Celsius / Abrasive for their assistance and filming. Mega-thanks to Paul Slocum for the maco asm code for 2600 that I based my software around interfacing with :-)

Come to Blip Festival Melbourne 2012!

ps. You can download a similar set to the one I played here at http://www.freemusicarchive.org/music/cTrix/Blip_Festival_2011-cTrix/cTrix_-_Live_at_BLIP_NYC_2011

Artist Spotlight: Talk To Animals @BlipFestival

“Talk to Animals compliments her moody, beat-driven 8-bit & lo-fi soundscapes with a range of vocal styles. The resulting music is alternately frenzied, melodic, fierce and serene, always with an unstoppable energy, as precise as it is punk.”

Talk To Animals played this year’s BlipFestival, and her unique style sets her apart. Using a MiniKP to process effects, Talk To Animals manipulates her sound live. Combined with her vocals and grimy, almost industrial sounds, Talk To Animals rocks.

Talk To Animals has released an EP on Bandcamp. Support this artist by picking it up for only $5. You can also add her on Facebook and MySpace.

REFORMAT THE PLANET Trailer

NYC Filmmakers 2Player Productions have spent the last three years documenting the underground Chiptune community, culminating in the release of their feature-length DVD, REFORMAT THE PLANET. Lots of great looking footage from BlipFest. I’m not even going to front like I know a lot about this project, I just stumbled upon the trailer and got so excited I needed to make a post. Not a want, a need to post on my blog. For more (actual) information, visit this post on motherboard by Zen_Albatross, or just watch the trailer:

REFORMAT THE PLANET is a feature length documentary which delves into the movement known as chip tunes, a vibrant underground scene based around creating new, original music using old video game hardware. Familiar devices such as the Nintendo Game Boy and Nintendo Entertainment System are pushed in new directions with startling results.

Using New York as a microcosm for a larger global movement, “Reformat the Planet” maps out the genesis of the first annual Blip Festival, a four day celebration of over 30 international artists exploring the untapped potential of low-bit video game consoles. With floor-stomping rhythms and fist-waving melodies, trailblazers of the chip tune idiom descend upon Manhattan to pen a new chapter in the history of electronic music.

The trailer features music by Nullsleep (“Salvation for a Broken Heart”, “On Target”), Martin Galway (“The Neverending Story”), and Random (“Micawber’s Moan”), all composed on classic video game consoles.
