CD Spotlight: Final Fantasy Piano Collections

When I think of video game music, my mind usually jump to fast, chippy, upbeat tunes overdubbed with hack and slash sound effects. Some of us this about the online video game remix community OCRemix, a site that hosts the internet’s largest collection of video game remixes done by musicians, composers, DJs and producers around the world.

I was surprised to learn many avid old-school gamers and Video Game Music (VGM) listeners have missed the wonderful music of the Final Fantasy Piano Collections, composed by the one and only Nobuo Uematsu. I had collected the Piano Collection for FFIV, FFV, FFVI, and FFVIII. Flawlessly played and brilliantly recorded, these albums capture the mood of the original 16-bit soundtracks, while elegantly taking the arrangement to new places.

My heart breaks to say I lost all my originals in a move, so now all I have are 128kbps MP3s. That’s back when iPods were only 5GB, but man, I wish I had backed them up. Anyway, attached is the “Tina” track from Final Fantasy 6: Piano Collections, composed and produced by Nobuo Uematsu. Please enjoy.

D+PAD Hero

A big, not surprising secret, I’m a huge Guitar Hero nerd. Somewhere burried deep in my subconscious I truly believe that a good enough play-through of a song on expert mode accurately simulates what it’s like to play the real song in front of a huge screaming crowd at some ridiculous animated venue. I also was terribly addicted to DDR for my bootleg PS1 back in the day. I blame it for the reason I didn’t eat a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich until I was 20 years old.

But enough about my pathetic video-game based upbringing, because you absolutely need to go download D+PAD Hero this minute. It’s a rhythm game, like Guitar Hero and DDR, but it’s been created as a NES rom you can play on an emulator. It’s like what rhythm games would have been like if they came out in the 80s. A very cool creation by the D+Pad Hero Team, it features sweet chiptune covers I’ve been listening to on repeat since I started writing this post.

So what are you waiting for? Download D+PAD Hero from DpadHero.com!

Electrochip “Elements” by Superspink

Superspink: Elements
While fumbling around for hours setting up the Dj CUTMAN MySpace, I ran across Superspink’s MySpace. I had heard a collab with Rhodo4 on 8bitcollective, so I was excited to hear what Superspink brought on their own. I was instantly drawn to the sweet anime-style art on Superspink’s page. That allure was quickly overshadowed by the Superspink’s high-energy, electro chippish music with a lot of atmosphere and great production. Better yet, Superspink offers two 5-track albums for free download. Very cool.
