I stumbled upon this album by way of Brandon L Hood and the Chiptunes=WIN facebook group, and I’m still in awe. Released in April of 2011 by netlabel Ubiktune, Equilibrium is a multiple artist comp of soothing, chilled out NES chiptune, unlike anything else I’ve heard. Original Sound Version writes:
“Equilibrium features 9 talented NES chip music artists, including FearofDark, Rushjet as well as surasshu who together create a soothing soundscape of tranquility, peace and a melodic balance inspired by the sea side and docks of Japan. The songs are ripe with inspiration and full of atmosphere, making use of ingenious sound effects to create a setting rarely heard from chiptunes, let alone NES based.”

For those reggae chipmusic fans out there you gotta check out JATARI.org from legendary Swedish lo-fi producer Dubmood. The site requres a font install but it’s a super sweet Commadore64 font so it’s cool. Go straight to the music here.

I always get a kick out of looking at the waveforms for chiptunes, they always seem to look the way they sound. The old chipsets didn’t have the resolution of modern recording equipment, so the waveforms always come out blocky and sweet like a sprite in a nintendo game. Here’s a shot of the waveform from UP, an off-the-wall-hard-core chiptune track by Spamtron. This track is so intense my volume meter barely even moves it just sits right at the top fucking my earholes open. awesome.
And of course, here’s the track.

It’s off the album D-PAD and is available on Spamtron’s Website
