Chiptune Samples for Music Makers

I recently downloaded Nanoloop for my new iPad, in a quest to find a quick and fun way to make chippy kind of beats. I’m traveling to Germany this summer and I don’t want to bring my whole rig, but I definitly want a way to write music. Well, if you haven’t used Nanoloop, I suggest you check it out, it’s a supremely cool micromusic maker (6 tracks, each with one synth or sampler) and the interface on the iPhone/iPad is simply amazing.

What’s more amazing then any particular sequencing software, is this page I ran across today while searching for Chipmusic samples to load into Nanoloop. It holds a wealth of links to chiptune samples, and a ton of them are free. If you’re looking to make chiptune or chip inspired music and don’t know where your old gameboy is, this site will help you out.

TrueChipTillDeath Supports Japan with Tunes

Chiptune blog TrueChipTillDeath is offering a super awesome way to help support those affected by the recent catastrophe in japan. Donate to the Red Cross and download an archive of 100 Chiptune Songs. Yeah, 100 of em. The archive is over 600MB and I’m proud to say I’m supporting this cause. I’m also stoked about all this new chiptunes.

If you’re looking for more ways to support Japan you can buy Hope For Tomorrow from Bandcamp, a collection of laid back instrumentals by some of the finest beat-makers. Music that makes you feel good.

Black Materia: Final Fantasy VII

I woke up this morning to the shock an awe of Black Materia, an original hiphop album by Random AKA MegaRan, exactly 14 years since the Japanese release of the Final Fantasy VII, the game that shattered perceptions and set the bar for storytelling and detail in RPG Games.

Listening to the songs on BandCamp, I’m still in awe. Great production, appropriate use of samples and dope vocal tone, this is an all-pro album featuring additional vocals by Brentalfloss, MC Pennywise, Devastate, Ilyas (of Tanya Morgan), Maja, Phil Harmonic, Dale Chase, and more.

With lyrics that reflect the story and taking the point of view of different characters, this record is a nerdcore achievement. Other tracks, like “Crys of the Planet” boast poignet lyrics that extend beyond the scope of the game to a transmit a socially conscience message Listen on Bandcamp or Download the Free Version from NerdcoreNow.com

All and all, this album is dope and a half. Support this killer team.
