Da Chip Vol. II – Daft Punk Revisited on Vintage Game Systems

The DA CHIP project started back in 2008 as an open competition organised on the 8bitcollective website by two french artists, Je deviens dj en 3 jours and Zombectro.

Four years later, the project returns, this time providing an expansive cast of chiptune talent in 13 crunchy chip tracks. From Sabrepulse to Cheapshot, Rushjet1 to Henry Homesweet, Da Chip Vol. II is a diverse and rocking album worthy of any gameboy.
And best of all, it’s free.

Syphus – pro.tect

pro.tect is a lovingly prepared collection of Syphus’ work from 2007 to 2011 – almost entirely unheard, outside of his live shows. Though the tracks have been mastered for more ear-friendly and mp3-friendly listening, they were all made using AHX (Amiga), HivelyTracker (Amiga), Protracker (Amiga) and FastTracker2/MilkyTracker (PC).

For more details, and for free mp3s and modules, visit syphus.net

For the morbidly curious, here’s a breakdown of file formats, the number of audio channels used and the original module filesize:
01: AHX/4ch/8kb, 02: AHX/4ch/16kb , 03: FT2/14/81kb, 04: FT2/6ch/25kb, 05: FT2/4ch/44kb, 06:FT2/16/75kb, 07: PT/4ch/12kb, 08: AHX/4ch/20kb, 09: HVL/12ch/13kb, 10: FT2/4ch/36kb, 11: FT2/24ch/255kb, 12: FT2/8ch/35kb, 13: FT2/12ch/94kb, 14: HVL/4ch/6kb

cTrix’s gAtari – chipmusic project at blip 2011

Artist at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/cTrix/118258328189500

The “gAtari” was my excuse to do something a little silly after I discovered that the Atari 2600 was more limiting than I realized! (31 pitches, minimal waveforms and only 2 channels!) I needed an EQ which could take a high voltage and drop it down to line level (Boss bass EQ) plus a way to hold loops between tracks and parts (Boss delay). So rather than have it “DJ” style config, I thought I make something a little more creative. It uses my atari-x-mod converter software which compiles binary files for Atari. You can find a little video about it here: http://vimeo.com/23589320

Big ups to Celsius / Trash80 / nf / Lazerbeat for the audio recording. Massive thankyou to sebastienvd81 & JDD3J for shooting additional video footage. Thanks to Wing / Celsius / Abrasive for their assistance and filming. Mega-thanks to Paul Slocum for the maco asm code for 2600 that I based my software around interfacing with :-)

Come to Blip Festival Melbourne 2012!

ps. You can download a similar set to the one I played here at http://www.freemusicarchive.org/music/cTrix/Blip_Festival_2011-cTrix/cTrix_-_Live_at_BLIP_NYC_2011

New 1xLSDj mix from Electric Children – Ambien

Electric Children brings us a new continuous Chiptune mix performed on a the Nintendo Gameboy. He writes:

Another 1xLSDJ Mix for you to enjoy. As the title implies, this mix is much tighter, more focused, and more coherent than the first-Like ambien for an insomniac.

And enjoy we do. Electric Children is showing us what it means to be a Video Game DJ, mixing a collection of songs on original game hardware. It’s so cool it makes me blog (no joke). Wait, that was a joke. Was it? I really blogged myself into corner here.
