halc – Hydrocity

Back in April I started a netlabel for my two favorite things, Chiptunes and Video Game music, called GameChops. Since then, it’s grown faster than I imagined, and today I am pleased to announce the release of a new, free album from the one and only halc.

halc is a composer, remixer and Overclocked Remix judge. His album, Hydrocity, seemlessly fuses chiptune, electro, dubstep, FM funk and jazz. Halc writes:

“Inspired by such visionary minds as Joshua Morse, P Villa, and Savant, this album has everything from chiptune-influenced electro and dubstep to ambient beats, FM funk and jazz fusion, delightfully blended and compiled into a 40-minute package. The album also features an arrangement of the ever-popular ‘Hydrocity Zone’ music from Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and guest appearances by fellow OC ReMix legends Level 99 and WillRock.

Big Giant Circles – Imposter Nostalgia

This post is long overdue! Jimmy Hinson, also known as Big Giant Circles, is a BAFTA-nominated music composer, rexmier, gamer, and staff member at Overclocked Remix. He’s best known for his work on BioWare’s epic Mass Effect 2, but this post is about something equality as epic, but in a different direction…

Imposer Nostalgia is BGC’s tribute to the game music of old, utilizing samples and synths to create compelling and energetic ‘fakebit’ chiptune. For those not familiar, ‘fakebit’ is a term for music that sounds like 8-bit, but in reality has many more bits. so many bits! This 20 track album is the cream of the crop of chiptune style compositions, with killer production that exhibits BGC’s expertise for sound design and mixing. Imposer Nostalgia is not to be missed. I digress, on to the music!

The album is available from Bandcamp for $5, or $10 for a hard-copy. Follow Big Giant Circles on Facebook and Twitter.

Big Giant Chrismas EP!

Composer Jimmy “Big Giant Circles” Hinson brings us some festive chiptunes perfect for bringing in the season. Created in the vein of his wonderful full-length Impostor Nostalgia, these tunes are light-hearted, upbeat, and definitely fun. I must admit, I am not much for seasonal music. As a kid I used to get motion sick on our annual drives to see the family, which resulted in a conditioned nausea when I hear Christmas music (too much Gameboy in the car, no doubt.) I am pleased to report that this album, with stealar arrangements and mixing, is not only allowing me to enjoy this wonderful tunes, but will also breathes new life in my holiday travels (and hopefully yours too!).

My favorite track would have to be Circle of the Bells, an chiptune / orchestral take on Carol of the Bells. It’s epic, emotive and genuine, as much as I’ve come to expect from Big Giant Circles. As an extra special gift, follow @bigGIANTcircles on twitter for a chance to grab a free download code!

The album is released by Ubiktune and is available from Bandcamp. Happy Holidays!

Mizuki’s Last Chance – Holy Bleep

There is no one else quite like Mizuki’s Last Chance; He’s a producer from the UK who makes, in his words, “chipdubnbasslectrotoncore,” and that’s not far off. Uncompromising hard electro/dubstep style drums layered seemlessly over melodic chiptune leads and gritty electro basslines and distortion. Holy Bleep is Muzuki’s first EP, but he’s been releasing tracks on Soundcloud and 8bc for years. Back in October VideoGameDJ gave the spotlight to Mizuki.

Follow Mizuki’s Last Chance on Facebook and Soundcloud. And of course, pick up the album on Bandcamp.
