Final Fantasy is widely known for exceptional characters, superb storytelling, and memorable music. The music is so loved that many groups have adapted it for live concerts, including five distinct tours over the past decade. Today, the team of electronic dance musicians at GameChops have released “Triple Triad,” a twelve-track remix album playing tribute to Final Fantasy and the music of series composer Nobuo Uematsu.

Spearheaded by UK producer Mykah, Triple Triad takes inspiration from three classic games in the Final Fantasy series, VI, VII, and VIII. To many, these games were an introduction into the series. To others, these games serve as a fond memory of when story, mood and music took precedent over graphics, hardware and spectacle.

Triple Triad contains a multitude of genres and styles to fit any electronic appetite; styles range from latin dancehall to drum ‘n bass to house and dubstep. Mykah shows his versatility as a producer, while the compositions of Mr. Uematsu are proven, yet again, to be powerful in any context. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the series or a casual listener of electronic music, Triple Triad is something special.

Listen and download it today from GameChops.

Tutorial: Emulating the SNES Sound In Your Favorite DAWS

The SNES definitely has its share of memorable tunes.

The SNES definitely has a lot of memorable tunes. Amazing compositions in games like Legend of Zelda,  Secret of Mana, Donkey Kong Country, Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger and many others have left 16-bit tunes running through our heads for years. This is where video game music started to take a turn toward the epic orchestral sounds we’re so used to today. However, you might have noticed that a lot more people are making NES, Genesis and Gameboy chiptunes and not SNES tunes. Why?

Well, the overall quality of SNES music isn’t really that great. It’s all samples. Many people will say it’s hardly any better than your standard MIDI. It is true that it doesn’t have as much character as 8-bit synths. However, there is some charm to be found in these degraded 16-bit samples of strings, flutes and guitars. I mean, the amazing, lush songs on some of the SNES’ RPGs just couldnt happen on the NES or Gameboy. I really love the snappy compressed drums in Secret of Mana too. Today, we’ll look at how to get these samples loaded up in your DAWs and also emulate the SNES’ classic reverb with a basic tape delay controller.

CD Spotlight: Final Fantasy Piano Collections

When I think of video game music, my mind usually jump to fast, chippy, upbeat tunes overdubbed with hack and slash sound effects. Some of us this about the online video game remix community OCRemix, a site that hosts the internet’s largest collection of video game remixes done by musicians, composers, DJs and producers around the world.

I was surprised to learn many avid old-school gamers and Video Game Music (VGM) listeners have missed the wonderful music of the Final Fantasy Piano Collections, composed by the one and only Nobuo Uematsu. I had collected the Piano Collection for FFIV, FFV, FFVI, and FFVIII. Flawlessly played and brilliantly recorded, these albums capture the mood of the original 16-bit soundtracks, while elegantly taking the arrangement to new places.

My heart breaks to say I lost all my originals in a move, so now all I have are 128kbps MP3s. That’s back when iPods were only 5GB, but man, I wish I had backed them up. Anyway, attached is the “Tina” track from Final Fantasy 6: Piano Collections, composed and produced by Nobuo Uematsu. Please enjoy.
