In an era where hit games almost always only came on Nintendo or Sega’s 8-bit systems, it was often intriguing to think about what your favorite game would look and sound like had it come out on the rival console. Well, some talented programmers are building the Capcom NES classic Megaman II on the Sega Master system, and so far it’s looking very promising.

Thanks to writing for VideoGameDJ, I’ve embarked on a personal mission to seek out as many video game remixes and chiptunes as I can, and share them with you. I’m usually interested in examples that aren’t very well-known, but with tens of thousands of followers and a presence on Monstercat, England-based EDM musician Protostar isn’t exactly “underground”. Game music record label GameChops has just released Spindash, a Sega-licensed tribute album to the music of Sonic the Hedgehog. Produced by Dj CUTMAN, Spindash features 16 video game remixers spanning diverse styles of dance music, from drum ’n bass to dubstep to trance.

Spindash is a modern reimagination of Sonic the Hedgehog’s most beloved music. Old school fans will recognize themes from Genesis-era favorites like Chemical Plant and Ice Cap Zone. The album also features music from more recent Sonic games, including Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Colors.
