Animal Crossing, the beloved video game franchise from Nintendo is getting its first full-length remix treatment be remixers Ben Briggs and ectogemia. The new album K.K. and Friends is their first collaboration, and is professionally mastered and released by GameChops.

Animal Crossing featured a unique approach to its music; depending on what time you played the game different tunes would play. K.K. and Friends contains nine cover songs found in the Animal Crossing series, organized by the time of day they’re presented in the game. Starting with an upbeat “Bright and Early”, taking us through “Rush Hour,” a “Rainy Day,” finally settling with the mellow, “Moonlit Memories.” The progressive arrangement and polished mixing makes it clear that Ben Briggs and ectogemia are two promising young musicians in the vibrant video game remix scene.

The album runs over a half an hour long, and is currently available for pre-order from KKandFriends.com. The album releases on June 9th, the same day as Nintendo’s newest game in the Animal Crossing series, New Leaf.

GameChops is the first record label to specialize in electronic video game remixes with high production quality and licensing.

halc – Hydrocity

Back in April I started a netlabel for my two favorite things, Chiptunes and Video Game music, called GameChops. Since then, it’s grown faster than I imagined, and today I am pleased to announce the release of a new, free album from the one and only halc.

halc is a composer, remixer and Overclocked Remix judge. His album, Hydrocity, seemlessly fuses chiptune, electro, dubstep, FM funk and jazz. Halc writes:

“Inspired by such visionary minds as Joshua Morse, P Villa, and Savant, this album has everything from chiptune-influenced electro and dubstep to ambient beats, FM funk and jazz fusion, delightfully blended and compiled into a 40-minute package. The album also features an arrangement of the ever-popular ‘Hydrocity Zone’ music from Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and guest appearances by fellow OC ReMix legends Level 99 and WillRock.

The Protomen – Act 1

While cruising the tubes today I ran across this Protomen quote splattered on a facebook wall.

He was a loner, a thinker, a man of ideas.
Ideas forbidden in Wily’s society.
The society in which he lived.
The society for which he worked.
The society he would set free.

Intrigued by the narritive and MegaMan reference, I googled it and it lead to me their website, with their stunningly artwork and killer songs. Further digging lead me to this page, now buried, it was my first glimpse into The Protomen a year ago. A music video to their song “Hope Rides Alone” , this video is an animated work of art taking hand-drawn characters, composite photos, and found-footage to create an erie atmosphere of a war-torn future in the year 200X. It’s worth a watch for sure, and check out more of The Protomen at their website.

REFORMAT THE PLANET Trailer

NYC Filmmakers 2Player Productions have spent the last three years documenting the underground Chiptune community, culminating in the release of their feature-length DVD, REFORMAT THE PLANET. Lots of great looking footage from BlipFest. I’m not even going to front like I know a lot about this project, I just stumbled upon the trailer and got so excited I needed to make a post. Not a want, a need to post on my blog. For more (actual) information, visit this post on motherboard by Zen_Albatross, or just watch the trailer:

REFORMAT THE PLANET is a feature length documentary which delves into the movement known as chip tunes, a vibrant underground scene based around creating new, original music using old video game hardware. Familiar devices such as the Nintendo Game Boy and Nintendo Entertainment System are pushed in new directions with startling results.

Using New York as a microcosm for a larger global movement, “Reformat the Planet” maps out the genesis of the first annual Blip Festival, a four day celebration of over 30 international artists exploring the untapped potential of low-bit video game consoles. With floor-stomping rhythms and fist-waving melodies, trailblazers of the chip tune idiom descend upon Manhattan to pen a new chapter in the history of electronic music.

The trailer features music by Nullsleep (“Salvation for a Broken Heart”, “On Target”), Martin Galway (“The Neverending Story”), and Random (“Micawber’s Moan”), all composed on classic video game consoles.
