Sabrepulse: First Crush EP

I am pleased to announce a new EP from Chiptune legend Sabrepulse. I’ve been waiting for this release since First Crush (featuring Knife City) premiered on Soundcloud this summer. This EP features eight tracks, including a collaboration with UK Chip Superstar Henry Homesweet who performs live with two gameboys and a DJ Mixer (low bit basement). Producing songs with Ableton Live and his Gameboy, Sabrepulse’s music feature relentless detail and masterful production.

Sabrepulse has been releasing chipmusic since 2005 (Discogs), from joyful Chiptune to aggressive ChipBRK, emotional 8-bit ballads to high energy headbanging DnB, Sabrepulse’s style is diverse. The consistency through all of Sabrepulse’s tracks can summed up with a simple phase, this is damn good music.

The title track to this production is my favorite, a genre shattering blend of Chiptune, DnB and Bassmusic, with intricate drum patterns and soaring 8-bit leads. Featuring Knife City (aka LikeLuke, the drummer from Anamanaguchi).

Spotlight: Mizuki’s Last Chance

Keen ears will recognize Mizuki’s Last Chance as the man behind the opening track of Dubtroplois. As a producer, he creates an unparalleled blend of dubstep and chiptune in his tracks. His mixes are sharp, his samples are crisp, and his drops are filthy. Producing in Reason 5, Mizuki creates a signature sound, aggressive dubstep-style tracks with super clean 8bit leads and arpeggios that fit in flawlessly. I’ve picked a few of my favorite tracks below, and there’s lots more on Soundcloud.

Electric Children – Insomniac

Sometimes our weakness can be an asset. Chipmusician Electric Children has been suffering from sleepless nights as of late, so it should come as no surprise that his latest released is titled Insomniac. It’s a 26 minute 1xLSDj mix. For those not attuned to the chiptuner’s lingo, that means this entire mix was played from a single Nintendo Gameboy.

This is what it means to be a Video Game DJ, in my eyes. For those of you who have seen me live you know I don’t go anywhere without my red macbook pro and kaoss pad. I really admire an artist who can create music like this from limited hardware. After all, that’s the art of the Chiptune, isn’t it?
